Recent Off-Campus Incidents
near the University of Rochester

Recently, there have been three nearby incidents involving University community members – a robbery and a larceny adjacent to the Medical Center, and one attempted robbery along the river path off University property.

A student was the victim of the larceny at about 5:00 p.m. on May 9, 2013, on Mt. Hope Ave. She was approached by a male suspect who grabbed her arms and took her cell phone and keys. The suspect then ran northeast on Mt. Hope Ave.

A student was the victim of the attempted robbery at about 10:00 p.m. on May 10, 2013, on the river path behind the Staybridge Hotel. He was approached by three male youths who demanded his bicycle. He refused and was struck in the face by one of the youths. The three then ran from the area.

A staff member was the victim of the robbery and assault at about 3:30 p.m. on May 12, 2013, in the Castleman Rd. and Elmerston St. area. She was approached from behind by a male suspect and after a brief struggle was struck in the face and had her wallet and cell phone taken. The suspect then fled toward Mt. Hope Ave.

Rochester Police are investigating these incidents and increasing patrols in the area.

Remaining alert to your surroundings at all times is the best defense against being victimized. Please report any suspicious person or circumstance to the Rochester Police at 9-1-1 or University Security at585-275-3333.

Safety Tips to Remember:

  • STAY AWARE of your surroundings. Keeping alert is your best defense.
  • LET IT GO! Property can be replaced, but you are one of a kind.
  • DO NOT ARGUE with a suspect or force a confrontation.
  • STAY CALM and observe everything that is taking place.
  • MAKE NOTE of a suspect’s direction and means of travel; do not chase or follow!
  • HAVE A PLAN! Rehearse in you mind what you might do if you were to find yourself in threatening situations – think about alternatives you can use.
  • AS SOON AS IT IS SAFE TO DO SO, call Security from the nearest Blue Light Emergency Phone or dial x13 if on campus. If off campus, call the police by dialing 9-1-1 (Every minute counts!)

Neighborhood Spirit Contest! Highland Park Attempts “Three-peat” – Sun April 28 8:00 AM

2013 April 14
by Michael

Organizers of the Flower City Half Marathon are once again holding a “Spirit Contest” to see which Rochester neighborhoods will do the best job of cheering on the marathon runners and showing pride in their city and neighborhood.

Sunday, April 28

Arrive by 8:00 am (don’t be late or you’ll miss it!)

We will gather on S. Goodman Street from Caroline St. up to Highland Pkwy
So come on out to cheer the runners on! Bring the kids! It is a fantastic way to start a Sunday morning. Here’s how to fit into the crowd:
  •  Wear your Highland Park neighborhood t-shirt or anything you own that’s GREEN or PURPLE, and throw a costume on the kids if you’d like. Wild and crazy attire and accessories are encouraged!
  • Bring SIGNS with messages to the runners, like “You can do it!”, “Runner’s Rock!” or anything that will help get them up that heartbreak hill!
  • Bring NOISEMAKERS – kazoos, penny jugs, drums, symbols & whistles!
  • Watch the VIDEO below and use it to practice YELLING.
  • MUSICIANS of all ages — grab your instrument and meet up for a jam session on the corner of Rockingham!
  • Most importantly, get ready to show your SPIRIT and have some FUN!

The Highland Park Neighborhood has taken 1st place the last two years running, and we must defend our title from anxious competitors like the Susan B. Anthony and Park Avenue neighborhoods. A $750 cash prize is at stake, which has been used in the past to help fund neighborhood projects like the pear tree sculpture in Ellwanger & Barry Park and the BoulevArt project on the corner of Linden & Meigs.

For more information and a map of the marathon route, visit www.flowercitychallenge.com.

by Michael

From Security Coordinator Paul Urai:

We are making this change so that NSC SE Quadrant Team Member Officer Michelle Velez can walk with us. So come on out and walk with Ofc.Velez,  my wife Beth and I. Get some exercise!  Get to know your neighbors and the neighborhood!  Have some pizza at local favorite Little Venice. The new dates are April 17th,  May15th,  June 19th, J uly 17th,  August 21st and September 18th. Hope to see you there.  Also be sure to put August 6th on your calendar for our third annual National Night Out this year featuring live music.

Next Walk:  Wed, April 17, 6:30 PM Starting from the NSC Service Center at 846 S Clinton Avenue

More From Paul: Spring seems to be an odd time to talk about Apple picking but this is a different kind of apple. Unfortunately our city has been hit with a rash of robberies where the “Apple ” i-Phone and other Smart Phones have been the target. You wouldn’t walk down the street waving $500 in your hand but that’s what we all are doing as we type on our expensive devices. We must be aware of our surroundings at all times.  Put the phone away if you are walking alone or at night. These phones can easily be flashed to other carriers and resold making them a tempting target. Another way to protect yourself is a locator app for your device these are available free at iTunes or Google play sites. These applications may assist you or the police in recovering your device if it is lost or stolen. We all love our smart phones we just need to be more alert to keep them and ourselves safe.

Remember stay alert, stay safe and have a great spring and summer!

Our HPNA PACTAC group always welcomes volunteers to take part in their walks.  Every resident is invited to  join any of the group’s  monthly walks  through the Highland Park Neighborhood on  the third Wednesday of the month starting at 6:30 p.m.  We meet at the South East Quadrant Neighborhood Service Center office on S. Clinton, and, as always, you can expect free pizza provided by the Highland Park Neighborhood Association during a mid walk break.

Upcoming Walks Are Currently Scheduled for

  • Wednesday May 15  **
  • Wednesday June 19
  • Wednesday July 17

Our First Garden & Bagel Day at HPNA Garden on Clinton: Saturday April 27

2013 April 9
by Michael
Garden Day 2012 at Monroe County in Bloom HPNA Garden near Artisan Church

Garden Day 2012 at Monroe County in Bloom HPNA Garden near Artisan Church

The first official HPNA Garden Day of 2013 is special for several reasons.   It’s the continuation of a new strategy to team with area institutions and other civic minded groups whenever possible.  In this case, our partner is Artisan Church which happens  to border on the Monroe County in Bloom garden we are holding this event at.   Another special touch: we are providing Bagels, Juice & Coffee as a thank for participants.   Look for two more sponsored days at the Gardens later, one for planting and mulching at a spring date to be determined, and another on September 28 where Cider and Doughnuts will reward volunteers who help us prepare this garden for fall.

What:  HPNA Spring Garden Cleanup Day @ Monroe County in Bloom
Where:  Monroe County in Bloom Garden near Artisan Church, 1235 S. Clinton Ave
When: Saturday April 27, 2013 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Who: Highland Park Neighborhood Residents, Friends & Members of Artisan Church
Also:  Bagels, Juice and Coffee ! Rain or Shine!

Even if you can’t attend, everyone can help keep the neighborhood looking good! The Monroe County in Bloom Garden  is one  of the three ongoing gardening projects that are currently supported by the Highland Park Neighborhood Association.  And the HPNA is interested in having a dedicated team coordinator  to plan and promote all garden activities.  If you are interested on leading or joining such a team or just want to be aware when our gardens need some care,  please let us know either by emailing or filling out the volunteer and 3 hour team interest form.

The map below shows the location of the three garden projects that the HPNA currently supports.  If you have an idea for another green space, large or small that you would like assistance from the HPNA in maintaining, please contact us to begin that discussion.   And thanks to all who do work to make our neighborhood look better and a little greener!

RACE: Are We so Different? An Exhibit and an Intiative

2013 April 3
by Michael

Race are We so Different? If you haven’t already, please consider seeing the thoughtful exhibit  on display until April 28  @ the Rochester Museum & Science Center entitled  RACE: Are We So Different?.  Explore the stories of race from the biological, cultural, and historical points of view.   Discover what’s not so visually apparent—hint: we’re not all that different!

Sponsored by the Rochester Area Community Foundation  and others. The exhibit is just one aspect of a local initiative called FR=EE or Facing Race, Embracing Equity which also launched in January 2013. Since then, subgroups of motivated citizens have been meeting on Criminal Justice, Education, Health Care, Housing and Employment to  present findings at the upcoming initiative summit on May 20, 2013.    Stay tuned for your invitation to join this exciting & fact based effort towards building the framework for a racially equitable community.  Or see the FR=EE website under Get Involved!
